Things To Do

Southwold is the perfect centre for exploring Suffolk’s Heritage Coast – from beach strolls at Walberswick and Dunwich to antique and art shopping at Halstead, Aldeburgh and Snape. And in Southwold itself there’s always something to discover around the next corner. You could even sail out into Sole Bay itself to see Southwold from the sea.

Fine wines that you won’t find on your high street and an eclectic mix of kitchenware and gifts; await in our Cellar & Kitchen store. Tucked away just behind The Crown, it’s an irresistible temptation; many wine lovers come to Southwold for this alone. There are other Cellar & Kitchen stores in Woodbridge and Holkham in North Norfolk.

Coastal Voyager at the harbour offer a range of boat trips from a high-speed blast around Sole Bay, a gentle cruise up the River Blyth to Blythburgh and a three-hour cruise to Scroby Sands to visit the seals and see the wind farm close up.

The Electric Picture Palace shows a wide range of films in a tiny (66 seat) cinema. It’s a unique cinema and no visit to Southwold is complete without paying it a visit. To book contact the manager, John Bennett, on 07815 769 565.

Southwold Pier offers some of the best views of the town. Have fun in the traditional Arcade, eat at the Promenade Café or the Boardwalk, shop at the Hook, Line and Sinker, laugh at Tim Hunkin's Under the Pier Show (must be seen to be believed) and enjoy the Water Clock as it marks every half hour with its quirky antics.

In the area

The Electric Bike Hire Network offers a fun way to tour the Suffolk coast on an electric bike. Our Dutch-made Sparta Ion electric bikes take the puff out of pedalling – hills and headwinds simply disappear! And you can stop at any of a dozen Charge Points throughout the area to recharge your bike if you’re planning a trip of more than 30 miles. To make a reservation ask at reception: the Swan keeps two electric bikes available for guests.

Snape Maltings is a unique collection of granaries and malthouses nestling beside the River Alde. Shops, galleries, restaurants and a world-class concert hall fill the old buildings. There are a number of events taking place at the Maltings including river trips, farmers markets, exhibitions and guided river walks. Snape Maltings is open daily from 10am.
