A New Look for the New Year at The Crown Hotel

By Sarah Groves, also posted in News on

Melissa Billen from MBD Interiors with one of the art boards for The Crown refurbishmentLast year, The Crown welcomed Tyler Torrance, Head Chef extraordinaire. This year, there's further change ahead - we're refurbishing the bedrooms to bring a fresh new look to our historic hotel in the heart of Southwold. The refurbishment is being designed and managed by local designer Melissa Billen of MBD Interiors, Orford. Melissa has already done some great work for us with the redesign and refurbishment of The Brewer's House which is situated right next door to the brewery, The Swan's light and airy Lighthouse Rooms, as well as the bar and drawing room. For those of you who have stayed at The Crown before, you'll know that every room has a character of its own. No two rooms are the same, so Melissa has created a unique design for each one. I asked Melissa whether she wanted to apply a particular style to the rooms. "As The Crown is an old building, each room is quirky and individual. I have designed the fabrics and furnishings to reflect the town's coastal aspect and link to the heritage of Southwold. Above all, the rooms will be comfortable and classic / contemporary in design with a boutique feel. I have aimed to distill the essence of Southwold into the rooms." Reflecting Adnams' environmentally-conscious policy, Melissa is working with local craftsmen and trade suppliers to source sustainable timbers and eco-friendly fabrics as well as recycled materials. The tilers recycle all their waste products, and Melissa has commissioned a set of table lamps made from old fishing buoys and hooks. "I'm going to the harbour later on, as I'm not quite sure what materials they have for me - it'll be interesting!" The bathrooms, too, are designed to be luxurious, yet with carefully controlled water flow to minimise waste. As technology and connectivity becomes increasingly important, all rooms and the public areas of the hotel will have free WiFi. There will be docking stations for ipads and ipods, and if you're traveling light, you can borrow an ipad for your stay. The refurbishment will be complete on February 24th, so the rooms will be unavailable until then. The restaurant will be open as normal for lunch and dinner every day apart from 20th and 23rd February. If you'd like to be one of the first to enjoy our new-look bedrooms, you can book now and enjoy a free botle of Adnams Champagne in your room. We look forward to welcoming you to The Crown soon.
