Adnams Spring Beach Clean 2016

Children with large tyreAs always, a big thank you to every one of our brilliant beach clean volunteers. Our Spring Beach Clean took place on Saturday 19th March 2016, and was fantastically well attended with 49 adults, 4 children and one dog. We met lots of new friends, which is great, as well as veteran cleaners to whom we're eternally grateful for showing us such strong support. The weather wasn't perfect with drizzly rain at the start, but it soon dried up mid-clean. Bellamine jarWe found a lot less litter than in September, which is perhaps to be expected as we're coming to the end of the low season where there are fewer people on the beach. However, we still found that the litter was dominated by plastic pieces from shipping as well as sweet and crisp wrappers left by the public. We also came across lots of un-bagged dog poo, which is especially bad news when children and wildlife come across it as it can be chock-full of harmful bacteria as well as parasites. There were also remnants of a few parties with empty wine and beer bottles and beer cans - luckily none from Adnams! We also had a number of interesting finds including a beautiful fragment of a Bellamine jar, or 'witch bottle' believed to ward off evil spirits which could date from 1650 onwards, and an enormous lorry tyre. After making it all the way to the harbour mouth, we all retired to the pub for a well earned pint and a soft drink. The next beach clean will be Saturday 18th June 2016. Please email to register your interest. Thanks again to every volunteer - see you again soon! You can view photos from the day on Flickr Adnams Spring 2016 Beach Clean. Photos Ben Orchard
