Adnams visits Oxford University Boat Club

By Sarah Groves, also posted in News on

OUBC men's crewAs proud sponsors of the University Boat Races, a small team from Adnams was invited to take part in a sponsors' day at the Oxford University Boat Club in Wallingford. The day was an opportunity for the sponsors to meet the crews in training and to learn more about how the rowers balance their demanding academic studies alongside intense training as elite athletes. The sponsors joining us on Wednesday's session were BNY Mellon, Cancer Research UK and Parmigiani, as well as Boat Race Director Michelle Dite and a team from sports marketing company Professional Sports Group. In 2015, key sponsors BNY Mellon and Newton Investment Management gifted their sponsorship rights to Cancer Research UK to enable this amazing charity to receive substantial media exposure and support their vitally important fundraising activities to enable more people to survive cancer. Women's crew side-by-sideThe University academic year has not yet begun but the potential crew members are already training and undergoing assessment for crew placements, either in the Blue Boats or the reserve crews, Isis and Osiris. The squad trains twice a day for six days a week, either on the river at Wallingford or in the gym in Oxford. A truly inspirational team, the rowers are enrolled as full-time students and are required to manage their intense training with the equally rigorous academic programme from the UK's leading University. The teams comprise experienced rowers (including Olympians such as Olivier Siegelaar, who kindly brought along his Bronze medal from Rio 2016) as well as students just beginning their rowing careers. It was a privilege to witness the determination, passion, dedication, and shear hard work undertaken by every team member, day in, day out. The crew and support teams work hard as individuals yet with a strong team spirit to achieve the very best they can together. Next week, we're off to Cambridge. Watch this space...
