"Spring has sprung and the wine world has moved into a higher gear. Here in Southwold there has been a veritable deluge of e-mails from hopeful producers all over Europe and beyond touting their wares and a fair few of them simply sending samples ‘on spec’. You might think that this small tsunami of free bottles would be welcome but since we dutifully taste everything sent to us I can assure you that it is not. It does serve one purpose rather efficiently and that is to let us know how bad some wines can be! Picture this – We taste in silence and you know when one of these wines appears as the silence just gets quieter! Eventually the silence breaks and single word expletives turn into sentences of disbelief “ I haven’t seen rubbish like this since the days of bell bottom trousers” (That’ll be Rob Chase).
All this goes to underline for us how important it is to ‘get it right’ at the lower end of the scale. This is a project that we have been working on over the past months and we are now in the process of rolling out a broad selection of single varietal wines under the Adnams label The ‘Great Grapes’ range has kicked off with a Tempranillo, Garnacha and Viura from a great, eco friendly, producer just south of Zaragoza in Spain, more will follow shortly. If you have the chance to visit any of our shops then do stop by for a taste, we would love your feedback.
While on the subject of sampling we are delighted to offer a Preview Tasting of several of the wonderful wines in our September Wine Club cases. The event will take place at our Southwold store on Friday, 2nd September. Our wine team will be there to explain all about the wines we have chosen and enjoy tasting them with you. For more information, please call us on 01502 725612. We appreciate that you are not all Suffolk residents, but if this does prove popular, we may run more Wine Club events further afield. You can also enjoy a night at The Crown or Swan, at a special Wine Club rate, if you want to make an occasion of our September Tasting."
