Both Barrels is Back!

Adnams Both Barrels oak aged BroadsideIf you're a fan of our limited-edition oak-aged Broadside, Both Barrels, you'll be delighted to know that this year's brew is now bottled! Both Barrels started life as a single barrel’s worth back in 2010 when we first opened our distillery. As we’d bought a mix of barrels for maturing our spirits, it began as a bit of a fun experiment. Fergus and the team added some bottling strength Broadside along with some cherries to a bourbon barrel and left it to mature for a year. The team drew off a few litres here and there to take to beer festivals during the year, but always topped it back up with fresh Broadside. Then, three years ago, the team emptied the barrel and spread its contents between twelve other ex-bourbon barrels and again topped them all up with fresh Broadside and cherries. Both Barrels was first released last year following six years' ageing in ex-Bourbon whisky barrels. Rather than take all of the beer out of the barrels for bottling, we left a portion in the barrels and topped it up with fresh Broadside and a handful of cherries to make this year's batch. In effect, we're creating a beer 'solera' system - similar to the fractional blending techniques used to mature sherry. Over time, the beer has developed its own special 'microflora' which imparts unique flavours to Both Barrels, and the team regularly top-up the barrels with fresh beer to exclude air and to keep the microflora healthy. Fergus and the brewing team have doubled production for this year's batch, from 12 barrels to 24. As we've re-used 12 of the previous bourbon barrels, there's less up-front whisky notes than last year's release. Every year the abv and the flavours will differ subtly as the beer slowly matures here in Southwold. Adnams Both Barrels Oak Aged Broadside2018 bottling tasting notes: This year's batch retains those toasty, vanilla and cherry notes with hints of whisky and a fruity, rhubarb tang. The flavours are like a super-charged fruitcake with sweet raisins and bitter cherries. It's Broadside, but not as you know it! Both Barrels Oak Aged Broadside (9% abv) is available now in 330ml bottles online and in our stores whilst stocks last.
