By Sarah Groves, also posted in News on

Fergus being presented with the APPBG Brewer of the Year TrophyWe're delighted to announce that Fergus was named 'Brewer of the Year' at the All-Party Parliamentary Beer Group Awards (APPBG) on Wednesday evening, 10th July. The award was chosen by a panel of judges from the Institute of Brewing & Distilling. This is the citation that was read out last night: "This year’s Brewer of the Year commenced his training in Ireland, continued in London and then travelled to the eastern reaches of the UK. He is a Master Brewer of the Institute of Brewing & Distilling and very committed to the education, qualification and development of his colleagues. Retaining a deep respect for brewing traditions he has also grasped the opportunity to develop a deep knowledge of the fast emerging new trends in beer styles and has developed a new range of products for his brewery to ensure they remain at the forefront of product development and meet new consumer needs and tastes. In developing a range of ‘world beers’ for his brewery he has used yeasts from around the world and also teamed up with other brewers on collaboration brews and has created a vast number of beers. Amongst the highlights of this innovation are East Green, the UK’s first Carbon Neutral beer, Sole Star – a 2.7% beer, Sole Bay Champagne-style celebratory beer, Ghost Ship and Innovation to name but a few. Our winner whilst normally found in his brewery can also often be found at his desk penning pieces for the company website and a wide range of publications – including some thought provoking pieces linking beer with Karl Marx, and also perhaps not too surprisingly given the location of his Brewery, Benjamin Britten. In summary our 2013 APPBG Brewer of the Year has
  • Developed his own skills and knowledge by becoming a Master Brewer of the IBD
  • Actively encouraged his colleagues to develop and qualify their own skills
  • Developed a range of exciting new products and brands to move with the emerging trends in the beer sector
  • Actively communicated through writing to share and broadcast his passion and knowledge
I am delighted to announce that the 2013 APPBG Brewer of the Year is Fergus Fitzgerald, Head Brewer of Adnams." Adnams brewer Fergus FitzgeraldThe All-Party Parliamentary Beer Group is a cross-party group whose aim is to promote "the wholesomeness and enjoyment of beer and the unique role of the pub in UK society; to increase understanding of the social, cultural and historic role of brewing and pubs in the UK and their value to tourism; to broaden recognition of the contribution of brewing and pubs to employment and to the UK's economy; to promote understanding of the social responsibility exercised by the brewing and pub industries; to support the UK's brewing industry worldwide; and to promote a positive future for beer and the pub." The other worthy winners included Andrew Griffiths, who received a Special Award for his work on halting the duty escalator; Paul Theakston, who received a Lifetime Achievement Award, and Sophie Atherton who was awarded Beer Sommelier of the Year. Now Stephen Pugh, our Finance Director, is renowned here at Adnams for penning little rhymes. Adnams Shareholders will be heartened to hear that no such frivolities are showered upon our accounts! We thought we'd share Stephen's little ditty with you: "Amongst brewers – that fast-growing host Stands one whom we all must now toast The name that we herald Is Fergus Fitzgerald Supremo of Beer from the Coast." Well done Fergus, we're so proud of you! You can read a small article on the awards on the East Anglian Daily Times website here.
