Broadside Day!

By Sarah Groves, also posted in News on

Flavours of 2012 Food & Drink FestivalMonday 28th marked the 340th anniversary of the Battle of Sole Bay fought off the coast here in Southwold. The weekend was packed with events and activities to commemorate the battle, with Adnams Broadside very much at the heart. Spirit of BroadsideThe weekend saw visitors enjoying free tours of the Copper House Distillery, including a peek at the brewery, before enjoying a taste of the newly released Adnams Spirit of Broadside. This unique spirit has been distilled from Adnams Broadside beer, and has spent a year maturing in oak barrels in the brewery cellars. It's a fitting tribute to the battle as well as reflecting Adnams' heritage and innovation. Guests on the tour also enjoyed an extended tasting in the Southwold Cellar & Kitchen store of all things Broadside ranging from the beer itself, the spirit and the Broadside-infused food products. Flavours of 2012 Food & Drink FestivalFood, drink and relaxing in unbroken sunshine was the order of the weekend at the Flavours of 2012 Food & Drink Festival situated within the walled garden of the beautiful Henham Estate. The Adnams Boat Bar, the Cellar & Kitchen Beach Hut and Tyler Torrance, Head Chef at The Crown Hotel, were all in action over the weekend. The most strenuous activity, it appears, was choosing what delicious morsel to try next from the numerous stands, and how to prise oneself out of an Adnams deckchair. Swimmer in the Broadside Open Water 1 mile swimOn Sunday, in complete contrast to the food and drink extravaganza of Henham, a hardy group of swimmers undertook the first Broadside Open Water 1-mile swim. Starting just north of Southwold Pier, they swam out to the end of the Pier, and using a series of bright yellow buoys as guides, swam south towards Gun Hill. They were rewarded by a finisher's medal and a bottle of Broadside to wash the salt from parched throats.
