Adnams Lighthouse Trinity House 500Adnams is proud to support the 500th Anniversary of Trinity House with a special limited-edition neck label design for our Lighthouse beer. Adnams Lighthouse is a light 3.4% abv golden beer with a gentle fragrance, lovely malty flavours and a long hoppy finish. Brewed with Pale Ale and Crystal malt, it has a hint of caramel and toffee and it’s hopped with a blend of Fuggles and Goldings. Look out for these special Trinity House 500 collector bottles in your local Adnams store and online. Adnams Lighthouse is named after Southwold’s Grade II, 102 foot-tall white Lighthouse. Since 1889, the lighthouse has protected shipping negotiating the ever-shifting sand banks in the Sole Bay and the entrance to Southwold harbour, standing firm over the town and our brewery. The subject of countless photos and artworks, it’s a much-loved feature of Southwold.

Trinity House 500

For five centuries, Trinity House has looked after the safety of shipping and well-being of seafarers. Today it has three distinct functions: a lighthouse service, charity and deep sea pilotage authority. It was King Henry VIII who granted a Royal Charter to a fraternity of Mariners called the Guild of the Holy Trinity, “so that they might regulate the pilotage of ships in the King’s streams”. The first lighthouse built by Trinity House was a air of wooden towers lit by candles at Lowestoft in 1609. Construction of Southwold Lighthouse began in 1887 to replace three local lighthouses which were under threat from erosion at Orfordness. You can read more about the fascinating history of Trinity House here. Southwold LighthouseEmma Hibbert from Adnams comments: “Southwold Lighthouse is such an important feature in the town, standing so proudly opposite the brewery and beside the Adnams Sole Bay pub.  We were delighted when Trinity House approached us to produce limited edition Lighthouse bottles to celebrate their 500th Anniversary. We have a couple of brave volunteers from Adnams who will join in the abseil and we will make sure that everyone (over 18) who abseils this weekend will receive one of the special-edition bottles of Adnams Lighthouse beer.” Paul Howe from Trinity House comments: “Adnams and the lighthouse are so synonymous with the town of Southwold that the chance for Trinity House to work with Adnams during what is a very special year for us, was an opportunity not to be missed.”

Trinity House Competitions

To celebrate their 500th Anniversary, Trinity House is running a series of fantastic competitions where you could win a week away at a Lighthouse Holiday Cottage and a visit to maintain Southwold Lighthouse in the company of its maintenance crew – keep an eye on our website for details on how to take part. You can also get involved in our Twitter competition beginning on Monday 7th July where we’re giving away a case of Adnams Lighthouse every weekday for two weeks. Trinity 500 Abseil Challenge - fundraisers will be abseiling down Southwold's lighthouse on Saturday 5th July from 10am until 4pm. Why not come and support them whilst enjoying a pint at The Sole Bay Inn. Here’s to the next 500 years!
