New Christmas Beer exclusively for Mitchells & Butlers outlets

By Sarah Groves, also posted in News on

Rudolf Nose Best Oaked Ruby Ale exclusively available through M&B outletsRudolf Nose Best is here! Available in selected Mitchells & Butlers outlets - Nicholson's, Ember Inns and Castle - this new beer is one of three Christmas beers that have been made in collaboration with the Nicholson's Cask Master team and three British breweries - Adnams Southwold, Brains Brewery in Cardiff and Harviestoun in Scotland.

The making of the making of…

Every Nicholson's outlet has a fully trained Cask Master whose role is to ensure that every Nicholson's beer is stored and served perfectly. The Nicholson's marketing department split the Cask Masters into three groups, and sent each team off to one of the selected breweries, along with a beer writer, to meet with the Head Brewers and come up with a special Christmas beer recipe. Fergus adds cassia bark to Rudolf Nose BestAmongst the 32 Cask Masters to join Fergus in Southwold was independent beer writer Ben McFarland who, together with Fergus helped the team select the ingredients for this special beer. Of course, there's a bit of healthy competition between the Cask Master teams to see which one has come up with the best recipe and beer name. It'll be the public that will judge that one (come on team Rudolf!).

The recipe

The group created a recipe for a 4.5% abv oaked ruby ale. They also wanted to add some subtle spice notes to add extra interest and seasonal flavours to complement the warm flavours of the oak. A selection of malts - Pale Ale, Chocolate, Cara and Crystal Rye - created a malty base with fresh yet rich flavours. They deployed an exciting blend of hops - Fuggles, First Gold, Summer and Galaxy and also added some interesting and distinctive spices to the hop vessels - toasted oak chips and cassia bark.

The name?

Jess designing Rudolf Nose BestWell, this is always the trickiest bit. After some quality brain-storming sessions with the Nicholson’s team, the favourite name came to the fore - 'Rudolf Nose Best’. It was then down to the creative talents of Jess, Adnams' designer, to produce the pump-clip design.

Fergus's tasting notes

"Rudolf Nose Best Oaked Ruby Ale has aromas of vanilla, cherry and subtle orange flower along with cinnamon and toasty vanilla notes from the oak. The palate is clean and rich with a touch of vanilla sweetness from the oak with a touch of cherry and dried orange - not bad considering we didn't add any orange peel - these flavours are from the hops!" This has been a fantastic project to work on with the Nicholson's team - it's been great fun, and we're really excited to be involved. Fergus and the brewing team are looking forward to tasting all the beers in the Christmas Beer project on Wednesday 20th November when each one is revealed and on the bars! You can find your nearest pint of Rudolf Nose Best at your nearest Nicholson's, Ember Inn and Castle Pub - we'd recommend phoning the pub first to check availability.
