Piolenc Garlic has arrived!

By Sarah Groves, also posted in News on

Jeremy from Adnams' Southwold store and new season garlicOur annual delivery of rose garlic bulbs has just arrived in Southwold from France. Now, you might well ask why Adnams is buying garlic. For many years now, we've bought a traditional-style Côtes-du-Rhône from Marc Ryckwaert, owner of Château du Grand Moulas in Mornas. The estate is just a few miles north of Piolenc - the self-proclaimed garlic capital of France. Marc would sometimes (depending on the time of year) add a tray of rose garlic onto his shipment of wine to us. Alastair explains, "The bulbs were shared around the staff at Adnams, and everyone really loved it. I thought, well, if we all love it, then our customers will too". So, for the last four years Marc has arranged for boxes of garlic to be sent to Southwold, so even more of us can enjoy freshly harvested French garlic. "Rose garlic has a gentle pink tinge to it, and the bulbs are substantially bigger than you'd usually find in the supermarkets. The flavours are more intense. The bulbs will begin to shrivel in about a month's time, but I like to think that it's the foodie equivalent of Beaujolais Nouveau!" Piolenc garlicThis year's harvest of rose garlic from Piolenc is available in our Adnams Cellar & Kitchen Stores at £1.50 a bulb. The Annual Fête de L'Ail (Garlic Festival) Held annually (August) in Piolenc, this is the festival's 33rd year. As well as a garlic market, there's everything from horses to street entertainment with processions of carts with garlic‐themed decorations. It's bound to be an aromatic affair!
