Rob's Pick of the Wine Sale

By Rob Chase, also posted in News on

Rob ChaseWhen it comes to seeking out a sale bargain, I could be classified as a Doubting Thomas or a ‘it can’t be any good then’ sort of person. (Fortunately my wife and daughter have long-since consigned my style of consumerism, along with the flares, to Room 101). When it comes to bin-ends, however, nothing stands in my way. So, if you are marginally ill-disposed towards a bargain, take heart - so am I, but I have chosen a handful of wines from our January Sale which I know to be really worthwhile buys and bargains to boot! **Please note the wine sale has now finished and these wines are no longer offered at the price stated. La 50/50 Tollot / Gros wine bottleThe 2010 Minervois 50/50 is designed for winter drinking, comforting stews and languorous weekend lunches. Old-vine Cinsault and Carignan are given definition and lift by young-vine Grenache. You can buy it by the bottle at £11.49 (was £14.59). Garnacha 'Los Bohemios', Jardin de Luculo, Navarra wine bottleOn the other hand, the 2012 ‘Los Bohemios’ Grenache (Garnacha) from Navarra, is a serious mouthful of spicy, dense, jammy lushness. This is Grenache as it used to be, and it should be drunk with bowls filled with Spanish chicken and chorizo stew. (£6.99 was £8.59) Altos de la Hoya, Olivares, Jumilla bottle shotContinuing, tenuously, with the Iberian/Grenache theme, we love the 2011 Altos de la Hoya red from Jumilla. A little Grenache (just 10%) is blended with very old Mourvèdre (Monastrell) fruit, adding a moment of freshness to the mellow, fruit-cake richness of this high altitude, south-west Spain gem. (£8.49 was £10.59) Nairoa, RibeiroAnd finally, the deliciously different but excellent Nairoa, a dry white from Ribeiro in northern Spain, made from a dazzling selection of local grapes; Palomino, Trexiadura and Torrontes. Given its proximity to the Galician coast in north west Spain, perhaps it’s time to oil the paella pan and think ahead to warmer days. (£6.99 was £11.49) And perhaps its also time to swallow one’s misconceptions about sale wines and bag a box of great-value bargains! But leave the flares where they are… at least for the time being. (Sale ends 25th January 2015 or while stocks last).
