Alastair MarshallDear Customer, It is incredible to think that 2012 is nearer at an end. Looking back at the past year it has been a fruitful one for new discoveries. I was surprised to see how many wines from South Africa quietly crept across the tasting counter and into your cases. This must surely be an indication of the growing confidence and maturity of the Cape wine scene.  Iberian wines of Spain and Portugal have been solid favourites and I see no let up in this delightful bounty. Admittedly, there is a certain desperation from the producers in such financially challenged countries who are more than keen to sell, so prices remain firm. We will continue to indulge as the price/quality ratio is so very, very good.  Sparkling wines and rosés have also found their way into your cases more often, whereas last year there were but a few. There is so much to explore in the coming year and I can guarantee that it will be viticulturally rich. I can also guarantee that wine will be more expensive! Already the Chancellor takes £1.90 per bottle in duty, and that excludes VAT at 20%. He has said that it will rise again. The harvests all over Europe look to be short on quantity if OK on quality and, given the dire state of some EU economies, price rises seem inevitable. This gloomy scenario highlights our long standing philosophy that if you open a bottle, make absolutely sure that it is a good one, as the old adage goes “life’s too short to drink bad wine” Christmas is upon us and for those of you who are feeling generous, or even know someone deserving of something special, then we urge you to consider giving an annual subscription to the Seasonal Cellar. Just contact us and we will organise everything.  Also, please do remember that as a Seasonal Cellar customer you are entitled to a 10% discount on all other wine purchases.
