The Environmental Times, 'World Days' for the Calendar

By Benedict Orchard, also posted in News on

Ben Orchard at Snape in SuffolkIn keeping with many a tradition; buses, wedding invites, lottery numbers and certainly workload, Environmental Days do seem to all come at once! The month of June is not shy in making you think about the one and only habitable planet we (so far) know of. Let me explain… Today (Thursday 5th June 2014) is World Environment Day which is the United Nations’ principal vehicle for encouraging worldwide awareness and action for the environment. It has been growing for many years and is globally recognised across social media for reaching millions of people. Adnams Coastal Clean bibIn just three days time, the next recognition comes in the form of World Oceans Day on Sunday 8th June, another United Nations’ project aimed at raising people’s awareness and respect for those large masses of water that connect us all and help sustain life on Earth. You can take part right on the doorstep here in Southwold as the Heritage Lottery Funded Touching the Tide project is hosting a celebration day showcasing what they have done and are planning to do in the local area. Southwold Beach Clean Volunteers, April 2014Do not worry if you can’t make it to that on Sunday: at Adnams we are always doing our bit to help the oceans through our regular beach clean on Southwold beach. Last time out we had nearly 30 people bask in the sunshine and collect more than 2000 pieces of litter, all topped off with a lovely pint at the Harbour Inn. Our next beach clean will be in early July and you can send me an e-mail to register your interest. Fat Sprat Amber BeerIn line with this, last year we brought out a new beer called Fat Sprat in support of the Marine Conservation Society. It is back this year for the summer and you can get it now in selected pubs, online or in our Cellar & Kitchen stores in 5l mini-casks. You can also taste it for free in our stores this weekend (excluding Waterside and Adnams Cellar at Jimmy's Farm) . 16th – 22nd June sees Recycle Week return, where you can get involved to see just how much you throw away and what you do with that resource. Near enough overlapping (14th – 22nd June) is Bike Week, an opportunity to promote cycling and its environmental and health benefits. So, as you can see, this is just scratching the surface of the opportunities out there to support your beliefs and good causes. If they happen to be towards respecting our natural environment that’s even better… however, I wouldn’t want you to forget World Gin Day (14th June) or International Beer Day (1st August) as well.
