Two Bays Oaked Pale Ale

By Fergus Fitzgerald, also posted in News on

Cigar City Brewing and Adnams collaboration beer - Two BaysNew Oaked Pale Ale brewed exclusively for Nicholsons and Castle Inn's Autumn Beer Showcase 2017 The Two Bays brew came about through Magic Rock Brewing, a great brewery in Huddersfield. Back in 2015, we brewed a collaboration with Rich and Stu at Magicrock - The Herbalist - which coincidentally we have just re-brewed as well. Wayne Wambles, from Cigar City Brewing in Florida, had brewed a beer with Magicrock around the same time and Rich suggested he should brew with us. At the time, Wayne had brewed over here a few times as part of the JD Wetherspoons guest brewer program and had fallen in love with cask beer. We arranged to meet up in Philadelphia at the Craft Brewers Conference and although we couldn’t sort out a brew that year we kept in touch so when Wayne arranged another trip over to the UK we finally sorted it out. Fergus and Wayne from Cigar CityWayne is doing three collaborations on this trip, brewing with us here at Adnams as well as Beavertown in London and Marble Brewery in Manchester. We were very happy he made time in what was a full-on trip. We’ve brewed an oaked pale ale. As I type, it's still fermenting but we are expecting it to have a nice fruity, lemon and pineapple hop aroma with a touch of vanilla from circulating the beer through a bed of oak chips. The name comes from the two bays where each of our breweries are situated - Tampa Bay in Florida and Sole Bay in Suffolk. Two Bays is a 4.4% abv oaked pale ale, brewed with Pale Ale malts and oats and hopped with Citra, Cashmere, Lemondrop, Enigma and Calypso. It has distinctive flavours of toasted oak, vanilla and coconut, balanced by fruity aromas of gooseberry. Having only met Wayne once before I wasn’t sure what to expect except that he brews some great beers. It turned out to be a great couple of days. Wayne has a great set of taste buds, as did Owen (a beer writer who accompanied Wayne) so Mark Dorber (from The Anchor, Walberswick, with a fabulous beer selection) met his match in the 'guess the brewer of the sour beer' game. Wayne is also fantastic technically and has an amazing knowledge and, more impressively, an insatiable desire to share his knowledge and to learn more. For the Two Bays launch nights, in Cambridge (Thurs 28th September at The Mitre at 6:30pm) and London (Tuesday 19th September at The Cole Hole at 6:30pm), we will bring the beer in an oak firkin that I’ve had made especially for the occasion to celebrate the marriage of new and old. You will be able to find Two Bays in Nicholson's and Castle Inn outlets on cask from Tuesday 12th September (please contact your nearest Nicholsons and Castle Inns pub for availability). The Autumn Beer Showcase runs from 11th September to the 22nd October. Two Bays will also be available in 330ml bottles in Adnams stores and online from early October 2017 for a limited time.
