We sell Sichel by the seashore...

Wine Buyer Dan KirbyAdnams Wine Buyer, Dan Kirby, introduces an exciting new range of wines from Bordeaux. Bordeaux, known for grand château and beguiling wines. But is it the press or prestige that gives these wines their world-renowned status? If we use a cake analogy, a relatively small sliver in terms of volume accounts for a disproportionately huge wedge in terms of cost - an interesting paradox. Most of the wines you and I probably routinely drink is the opposite of this though: good value, classily structured reds made mostly from Merlot and a dash of Cabernet. These wines are the region’s bread and butter (pudding). Chateau PalmerStep in Maison Sichel, an Anglo-French family business that call Château Angludet home. Sichel are joint owners of Chateâux Palmer and work tirelessly across the Bordeaux region buying and selling wines. Adnams have been working with Maison Sichel since the late 1970’s! Seven members of the Sichel family work in the business. Allan Sichel, the MD, is currently serving president of the CIVB, the Bordeaux Wine council. The youngest, Allan’s son, Max Sichel, will be looking after the UK market, so I’ll mostly be working with Max in the search for Bordeaux wines from Sichel. Max will be the chap you see over here in September, he’ll be out and about tasting in our stores, hosting dinners & showing off their wines, while ideally talking about all things Bordeaux. You’ll probably catch him comparing the Southwold surf to the French west-coast and the differences between Pelforth Blonde and Ghost Ship. The wines we’ve decided to show in September are, what we believe to be, a marvellous cross-section of the Maison Sichel range with a focus on the everyday! (Our grander selections in the ‘Adnams Claret Case’ (in a sturdy wooden box, £79.99) are a little more grown up in style and they’re all selected from Sichel too). It’s a chance for us to showcase the wines of theirs that fit nicely onto the shelves in our Adnams stores. We’ve made an effort over the years to champion wines that are for sharing and enjoying. Rolling Bordeaux countrysideWe couldn’t have put together the choice without the final property in Bordeaux owned by the family, Château Argadens. Their red & white pair complement each other well. The white is a clean and refreshing blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon with nutty, vanilla oak and a bright, juicy Merlot for the red. They’re not all from Bordeaux! Sichel own one property in the Corbières region on the south coast, called Château Trillol, the wine is obviously made by Bordeaux aficionados, while using the region’s local grapes Grenache, Carignan and Syrah. This is a chunky and full-bodied wine crammed with toasty black fruit flavours. Saying that, the star of the show for me is one that we worked on with Maison Sichel. We asked if they could find a winery who’d be interested in making a wine to fit in our Adnams Estate range and they came back with a Saint-Emilion from the 2012 vintage crafted by Château de Brens. A fleshy, herby and with a subtle toasty oak flavour, it’s a fantastic take on Merlot with just 30% Cabernet Sauvignon for structure, classic St Emilion. Mixed six bottle case from SichelYou can buy a six-bottle case of wines (£75, standard UK delivery is free) from Maison Sichel here.
