Your pick of the wine sale...

By David Wyatt, also posted in News on

Adnams Wine Buyer, Dan Kirby, selects the pick of the bunch of this year's September wine sale. We're taking stock of what we brought in for summer and selected a dozen or so wines for our wine sale. I tend to buy far too much of the wines I like the most for the summer as I can't face the idea of running out of my favourite summer tipple, but some of these whites are best enjoyed while the sun is still shining. The wine sale also gives us the chance to make space for all the winter wines I want to bring in for the season (and, dare I say it?) Christmas. A delicate balancing act between still having wines for summer available, but at the same time squeezing in some real treats for winter, which usually means we need a clear out to make room! The first wine that I’d snap up in the sale is the Vinho Verde Cape Roca (available in our stores only). We didn’t get much of a summer this year - I’m still waiting for the sun - but when it shines, a slightly spritzy, lower alcohol Vino Verde is the first thing I put in the fridge. We found the Villa Dria Chardonnay/Gros Manseng on a trip to Montpellier in Janurary. We were looking for interesting, characterful wines for our Wine Club and we found this, duly popped it into the summer Wine Club case, and also decided to order some extra for our retail stores. A little 'off the wall', it’s an unusual blend, the use of local grape Gros Manseng gives the Chardonnay some extra freshness and citrus aromas, the pair work really well together. The red I’d go for from this sale selection is the Torri Cantini Montepulciano - a jammy, ripe mouthful of fresh red cherries and fresh, sweet strawberries, very playful. We do this wine in 5ltr boxes (six bottles worth in a box!) as well, which will be the only way to get the wine once the sale is over.
