Perfectly balanced hops and malt creates a classic session beer, enjoy!
First brewed in 1967 (under the name Adnams Best Bitter), Southwold Bitter holds our oldest trademark, Southwold Jack. This small wooden figure depicts a young soldier from the 15th Century Wars of the Roses. Some believe he was based on a real man who walked the streets of Southwold, a local boy who fought as an armoured foot soldier for the Duke of York – we may never know. Named ‘Jack the Smiter’ he stands at 4 feet 4 inches tall and is constructed of painted wood. Known as a ‘Clock Jack’, his job is to strike the hours on a church bell with his battle axe.
Contains gluten - barley
I have been coming to Southwold for decades and always head straight for the Nellie (Lord Nelson) for the first pint of Southwold Bitter of the holiday (the first of many). That taste! Nothing else comes close. PS My Collie is called Nellie in honour of the blessed Adnams bitter
I took a chance buying Adnams bitter bottles from Sainsburys in Manchester as l had never heard of it , usually l only bought northern beers convinced they were superior , how wrong was l!
This bitter is a truly gorgeous taste and a lovely creamy head, poured right. In all my years of drinking only Timothy Taylor's comes close and that is some compliment.
The only gripe l have is that having aquired the taste for this magnificent bitter Sainsburys no longer sell it (ghostship etc not for me) why??? Please make a Mancunian very happy and sell your bitter in Manchester, it's simply the best.
