Southwold Bitter is a beautiful copper-coloured beer, late hopped with Fuggles for a distinctive, lingering hoppiness. Perfectly balanced hops and malt creates a classic session beer, enjoy!
Our Bitter pairs with roast meats and fish cooked in batter as the clean bitterness cuts through the slightly fatty notes and hence keeps the palate refreshed.
First brewed in 1967 (under the name Adnams Best Bitter), Southwold Bitter holds our oldest trademark, Southwold Jack. This small wooden figure depicts a young soldier from the 15th Century Wars of the Roses. Some believe he was based on a real man who walked the streets of Southwold, a local boy who fought as an armoured foot soldier for the Duke of York – we may never know. Named ‘Jack the Smiter’ he stands at 4 feet 4 inches tall and is constructed of painted wood. Known as a ‘Clock Jack’, his job is to strike the hours on a church bell with his battle axe.

Sailing holidays up and down the east coast.....We were always happy to arrive at Walberswick to really enjoy a few pints of Adnams and a plate of Dinks freshly caught cod. Never forgotten the experience and now looking forward to more of that Adnams Southwold Bitter. I hear it is as wonderful as it ever was.
I have been drinking Adnams cask Southwold Bitter for half a century and it is as good now as it has always been. Utterly delicious - the best beer in the world. Don't ever change it!
This is truly a great session beer, not too strong and not too weak. I enjoy a few pints of this at lunchtime and afterwork.
This is what a proper bottled bitter should be. Full of flavour and body, not too sweet or too strong.
If this isn’t the best session beer, bottle or draught then I don’t know what is!
A gentle pairing for flatbreads, with not too strong New World hop character, but something to pull forward that nutty buckwheat taste. The light, grassy aroma from English Fuggles hops will elevate the flavours, while refreshing your palate.
