A traditional winter warmer with flavours of red fruit, roasted grains, and a hint of caramel.
Old Ale’s style is akin to a mild. It is brewed with East Anglian Pale Ale malt, Crystal malted barley and First Gold hops and has that warming fireside glow about it.
You’ll find rich aromas of caramel and nutty chocolate, which also come through on the palate along with hints of liquorice and red fruits. This is all balanced by a smooth bitterness that cleanses the palate and makes room for the next sip.
Old Ale is based on one of Adnams' oldest beer recipes, dating back to 1890. It’s traditionally brewed in the winter months and is eagerly anticipated with the change in the seasons.
Fergus Fitzgerald, Head Brewer said: “The brewing team look forward to making Old Ale, just as much as our customers look forward to drinking it. Hops play second fiddle to malt and we use Crystal, so there’s lots of toffee and liquorice in there. It’s sweet, with just the right amount of mild bitterness to cleanse the palate and make room for the next sip.
Old Ale is a term traditionally applied to strong, dark, malty beers and has been known to describe bottle conditioned ‘stock ales,’ or ‘keeping ales,’ which were beers held in a pub or brewery to mature and age.
Historically, old ales were served as a ‘boost’ to mild ales and were supplemented according to taste. This practice began in pubs and was later picked up by breweries who stored and sometimes blended beers to add some ‘old’ character to the new. Breweries such as Adnams produced a lighter style of old ale, almost replicating the flavours customers were trying to achieve when they took the time to blend their own at the bar. They offer a tantalising taste of the past.

I was lucky enough to purchase some of this before Xmas and it has gone down a treat. For those who like their beers dark and malty this is a superb example. Memories of winters in Norfolk came flooding back with the first sip - sitting by a roaring log fire with good company. Really pleased to see it comes in bottles now as I can enjoy it at home.
One of my late Grandads favourites, and I can certainly why. I make sure the family has some to hand every Christmas to raise a glass to my Grandad. Emotional bias aside, I really enjoy its smooth, malty flavour as it suits my preference for less bitter, malty ales. Thank you Adnams, and I hope "Old" is produced for many years to come.
I see phrases like winter warmer and words like caramel, and what I want is a beer that balances a sweet maltiness and hearty “spice”. What I fear is that I’ll get an overly sweet brown beer tasting mostly of raisins. Adnam’s didn’t let me down though, and this is the beer is exactly what I was hoping for.
I grew up in South Cambridgeshire and was fortunate that the Queen's Head at Newton was my local and was the furthest west Adnams would deliver. The beer was served straight from the cask in the bar and was utterly delicious. Usually Adnams Best Bitter, but in the winter we would be treated to Old, Tally Ho and Broadside. My favourite at the time was a 'Mother-in-law' Old and Bitter mixed half and half (see what we did there!). Happy daze.
Close your eyes, imagine a cold evening, but sitting by a warm fire; reach out and the glass you’re holding contains Ole Ale....sip and enjoy liquid joy!
I'm a broadside drinker ,but I have just discovered old ale ,what a great dark beer , the darker the beer the better. Thanks ADNAMS .
