As it is made from hops foraged from hedgerows, open spaces, gardens and allotments, every batch of Wild Hop is unique. Each year, it’s brewed with Amber, Brown and Pale Ale malts and a wide variety of wonderfully wild hops donated by our eagle-eyed hop pickers and home growers.
Contributions to this brew were delivered to us in September 2020 and have added grassy and herbal notes, alongside subtle pine flavours. It captures all the excitement of this year’s hop harvest.
Best Before 30th January 2022
Wild Hop is a collaboration with the local community and has been brewed annually since 2014. Each September we appeal for donations of wild or garden hops and encourage beer lovers to forage for us, or report sightings. The public have never let us down, no matter what impact that year’s weather has had on availability, and contributions pour into the brewery. The team then work tirelessly to prepare all the wild hops for the brew day and the resulting beer is always totally unique to that year’s harvest.
It is a favourite with Head Brewer, Fergus Fitzgerald: “The reason we started making this beer was to celebrate the new harvest and to get people involved in the ingredients and the brewing process. We love that so many people take part each year. For most of our beers we are trying to make the flavour consistent with each brew, so you know what you’re going to get when you taste a particular brand. However, the raw materials are different from batch to batch and these variations can subtly alter a beer. Usually these changes are small, but we spend a lot of time looking for them and working out how to control them. With Wild Hop, we simply take your hops, and let the season shine through. We let go of that ultimately foolish belief that we can control everything, concentrate on the bits we can, and embrace the unknown. It always makes that first taste of Wild Hop particularly exciting for the brewing team and our regular contributors.”
If you fancy getting involved in the future, sow seeds and plants before April (you may have to wait a year before your bines yield cones) or keep an eye for our call to action in September.
