A rich and complex amber spirit packed full of wonderful fruit and spice. The final spirit has whisky aromas and notes, but what makes it so distinctive is that malt and hop flavours also come through, thanks to its origins as a fully formed beer.
Spirit of Broadside retains some of those beery characteristics - namely caramelised malt and hints of hoppy astringency. Maturation in oak barrels for at least three years adds a woody sweetness and spicy notes of nutmeg, cinnamon and cardamom. The sorbet-like hoppiness cleans your palate, followed by a lingering vanilla sweetness and black pepper finish.
Drink as you would a whisky or play around with some classic whisky cocktail recipes. Savour alongside a honeyed Tart Tatin or Crème Brule.
Adnams Broadside was inspired by The Battle of Sole Bay in 1672. It was first brewed for the Tercentenary of this historic event and named after a big hitting manoeuvre of warships. The beer really packs a punch, especially in bottle and this makes it great for variety of uses, including in cooking. It was the beer’s ability to hold its own, that made it perfect for use in distilling into an amazing, full-flavoured spirit.
Spirit of Broadside is an eau-de-vie-de-biere and quite a rarity. Normally made from fermented fruit, eau-de-vies are distilled quickly, to retain all that lovely flavour. Spirit of Broadside is produced in a similar way, but it is the direct distillation of fermented beer that would normally be destined for the bottle.
It undergoes an ageing process similar to whisky and has been in wood well beyond whisky’s legal requirement of three years. However, we can’t call it whisky because it does not evolve from neutral grain spirit. Spirit of Broadside was born of a proper beer, not a distillery grain wash. Its source contains hops and so it’s something a bit different - a bit of a talking point. An intriguing alternative for the whisky connoisseur or inevitable eyebrow-raiser for the intrepid beer fan.
Its not whisky that's for sure but it really is special, I love the lingering hop flavours. Intriguing experiment that really works. I have always wondered what would happen if a whisky distillery distilled beer rather than grain mash now I know and I like the result.
Definitely the nip you need when coming in from the cold.Starting with its ancestral beer flavour developing into the warmer whiskey tones which refresh the pallet.
This is my first taste of Spirit of Broadside but I will be calling again.
I have got to admit I am normally a cognac drinker. This intrigued me as I love broadside beer. This will now be a regular in my home, a beautiful drink.
