For the third week in our Adnams Wine Festival, we are taking you back to the “Old World”. The Iberian countries of Spain and Portugal are famous for traditional styles of wine. Of course, renowned for Port, Portugal also produces several excellent examples from over 200 regional varieties. Bordering Spain has a vast 2.5 million acres of vineyards, with varying climates and, consequently, wine styles. The wine case which we have curated for you this week shows the wonderful diversity and traditionality of Spain and Portugal.
This case includes:
1 x Adnams Tempranillo, VdlT Casti
1 x Adnams Rioja Crianza
1 x Adnams Alvarinho
1 x Crasto Branco, Quinta do Crasto
1 x Marques de Altillo, Rioja Blanco
1 x Condado de Oriza Roble, Ribera del Duero
Adnams Rioja Crianza
Intense cherry and violet aromas, structure and elegance, great with food or alone. Produced in La Rioja Alta in the north-western part of the Rioja region from low-yielding, old vines. The Rioja Alta region is higher in altitude than Rioja Baja in the east and is known for producing wines that are more aromatic with plump, juicy fruit and bright acidity. This Rioja is classified as Crianza, meaning the wine is aged for a minimum of 12 months in traditional American oak barrels that give the warming vanillary, cigarbox, toasty notes typically associated with Rioja. We selected this wine for its mellow aromas of sweet cherries, red plums, orange peel, well-integrated oak as well as juicy structure and elegance.
Condado de Oriza Roble, Ribera del Duero
Bright crimson in colour with touches of purple fruit, sweet spices, liquorice and toasted coffee beans. In the last 30 years, the Denominación de Origen Ribera del Duero has emerged to challenge the crown of Spain’s greatest wine region; Rioja. Located in Spain’s northern plateau, this region is characterised by its largely flat, rocky terrain. Condado de Oriza Roble is made from Tempranillo (known locally as Tinta del País) that are carefully selected from vines grown on the clay and loam soils at Olmedillo de Roa and surrounding lands and villages in the province of Burgos. After fermentation the wine is aged for 6 months in American oak barrels before bottling. On the palate the wine is fresh and juicy with well-integrated tannins and acidity. A lovely fruity finish with fine notes of spices.
Adnams Tempranillo VdlT Castilla
Savoury, black fruit aromas and juicy, dark fruit character and a tinge of oak on the palate. Tempranillo is the grape that made Rioja famous, you'll notice just a tinge of oak on the palate, enough to enhance and compliment the brooding dark fruit flavours.
