Grüner Veltliner may not be a grape that you’re overly familiar with, but it’s a grape that offers so much to savour. James, our Master of Wine discovered this Grüner on a recent trip to Austria while visiting the Bründlmayer vineyards, situated 70km away from the beautiful historic city of Vienna.
Willi Bründlmayer and his team have a first-class reputation for producing single varietal wines of outstanding quality. Situated in the lower Kamp Valley, during the day the sun warms the stony terraces, while at night the fresh fragrant forest air drifts through the vineyards, crating the perfect growing conditions for Grüner Veltliner.
The Adnams Grüner is bursting with fresh citrus and flowery aromas, crisp and fresh with a spicy finish on the palate. On the nose you experience the perfect mix of apples, citrus, rosewood and asparagus. Renowned wine writer Matthew Jukes recently sampled the Grüner and recommended the wine in his Daily Mail column saying: “The fact it’s made by the great Brundlemayer winery means the zesty and refreshing flavour is nothing short of superb”.
All of Willi Bründlmayer’s vineyards are cultivated sustainably with the greatest respect for the natural elements with as little intervention as possible. It’s the quality of the soil and expertise of the winemaker that make Bründlmayer wines highly sought after and internationally respected for their outstanding quality.
“The art of wine making consists of understanding a natural product grown on living soil in such a way that the metamorphosis – from vine to grape to juice to wine – is like a melody. The wine tells everything about the soil, the heat and cold, of storm and rain, the landscape – and the people involved from the beginning.” - Willi Bründlmayer
